Trend: Digital Signs & Menus

Like every industry these days, retail is experiencing some major transformation. The use of digital signage for display, information and menus is proliferating the customer experience, creating rich brand touch points.

Useful and Beautiful

As humans, we are all inherently attracted to screen experiences. Taxicabs and grocery stores play relevant video content while you travel or wait in line. Gas stations use screens inside and outside, constantly delivering content.

Besides being visually attractive, digital signage allows for quick and easy content updates, saving on printing and production costs, as well as time. 

Argo Tea’s digital menu boards (see featured image) rotate a seasonal selection of beverages. The digital system saves the company a large sum of money when it comes to changing the menus.

When I worked at Starbucks in college, the company would send 3 printed menu boards to each store for every seasonal, pricing change and promotional menu update. Imagine the costs for printing and shipping these menu boards to thousands of stores across the country, versus sending updated content out to a digital menu board!

Interactive Digital Signs

In addition to the obvious benefits to digital signage, this technology can employ interactive capabilities, which can enhance the live user experience. 

Employing digital signage in the retail or healthcare environment enables a customized experience for each user. Capabilities include rich, branded user interfaces, touch screens, movement detection, image capture, etc.

In the retail environment, customers can use digital signage and interactive screens to order items in-store to be shipped directly to their homes. There are even virtual stores popping up in subway stations, allowing consumers to purchase groceries to be delivered to their homes. 

Second screen also comes into play, as mobile devices are increasingly being used in the retail environment. Imagine a digital sign prompting users to text for coupons or health information. When the user complies, the sign could update with the next step, and the interactive process continues.

Or, users could play a game or receive personalized health information with a digital sign using their mobile device while they wait in the doctor’s office.
